Organization versus chaos
Once we have decided to integrate a puppy in our life...
Once we have decided to integrate a puppy in our life, the issue of urine, droppings and hygiene in general will require a certain amount of organization, which is crucial if we live in a flat/apartment. Apart from what has already been mentioned in the article (Implications of having a dog) the organization would include:
1) Always have the whole walking/training kit ready. We cannot afford to have to prepare it when we get up in the morning because this will cause the puppy to urinate inside the house during that period of time. My advice is to anticipate and get up before the puppy, take him in our arms before he moves and take him out of the house, this will save us a pee to clean up while reinforcing the desired habit: peeing outside the house.
2) In the puppy phase, schedules are important to establish the first habits. This, together with the right amount of exercise for his age, will allow us to be in tune in terms of sleeping hours and that no sobbing of the puppy interrupts our rest.
3) A great connoisseur and observer of canine behavior calculated a more or less approximate ratio of the needs of a puppy in terms of urinary frequency: The stamina of a puppy (hours) would be the sum of his age (months) +1. This would mean that the stamina of a three month old puppy without urinating would be up to four hours. With this in mind, it is easy to calculate the amount of urine that we can find at night. The last urine, if we keep in mind point 1) is avoidable.
4) The advantage of an early education will allow us to leave our puppy in the "stay" position while we pass the mop without him trying to play with it, making our task impossible.
